EVENTS & WORKSHOPS

2019 Workshops & Events

Picture

August 14th, 2019 from 5-7:30pm: Come tour our farm, taste our teas, and enjoy some arepas!

Tour starts at 5:30pm! Enjoy a sensory tour of our fields of culinary, medicinal, and tea herbs!  On the tour, you'll wind your way up the hillside (which features an amazing view of the village of Chelsea!) to tour the perennial and annual herb beds and learn about our ethos, growing practices, history, collaborations, and more.

After the tour, you'll head back down the hill for iced tea (free) and homemade arepas made using locally-grown organic corn (for purchase) from the Moon & Stars Food Cart. Moon and Stars Farm is a project that connects communities through the Arepa-making process while bringing native, heritage, open-pollinated corn back to the VT landscape.

$5.00 suggested donation per person. All ages welcome!

July 14, 2019, from 12pm to 5pm:
Foraging Basket Workshop with Penny Hewitt

Enjoy a day of basket weaving on our hillside herb farm!

In this 5-hour class lead by Penny Hewitt, you will weave a round basket, approximately 6”x 6,” with an optional strap.

This class also includes a discussion of how the ash for the baskets is harvested and processed.

This is a great class for ages 10 and up.

About the teacher, Penny Hewitt:

A craftsperson, teacher, homesteader, and homeschooling mom, Penny Hewitt lives with her family on a diversified farm in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Through the curiosity of her sons, she became fascinated with and then passionate about preserving and passing on traditional skills, particularly in the forms of black ash and birch bark basketry.

Working with responsibly harvested and hand-processed materials from the forest surrounding her home, Penny seeks to create objects of beauty that are useful in everyday life. She is inspired by traditions of other cultures, and grateful for the opportunities of connection to people, place, nature, and self that her craft cultivates. Her experience with weaving includes teaching workshops, leading homeschool groups and crafting for income.

August 10, 2019 from 2:30 to 7:0pm:
Natural Dye Workshop with Susanna Taylor of Earthen Warrior.

In this outdoor class, Susannah Taylor, owner of Earthen Warrior, will introduce you to the basics of natural dyes in the most beautiful mountainside setting!

We will be using an assortment of dyes—many of them grown and harvested at Free Verse Farm, as we have begun a partnership with Eathen Warrior to grow natural dye plants for their ever-expanding line of sleepwear and bedding.

You will dye over a fire pit amongst the flowers, herbs, butterflies and bees. You will learn all about which fibers you can use to dye, how to make bright, saturated color that lasts, and you will get to experiment with a range of colors to create a natural rainbow. We will use flowers and dye grown on the farm, as well as exotic natural dyes, medicinal plants, and food waste.

You will leave class with your own color swatches, a silk scarf, and a cotton tote.

For people traveling from further away who may want to stay over on this stunning property and make a weekend of it, you can camp for $35 a night.

This is going to be a magical weekend of learning about natural color in a truly stunning rural setting. We hope you can join us!
